Fashion Rules at Neiman Marcus

Neiman Marcus proved they know how to throw a party with their Fashion Rules event on March 3rd. Turning the entire store into a fashion runway was just the beginning of the excitement; guests enjoyed a bar, a dj, amazing food and a crew of live digital artists. I was joined by the talented Salah Khudar as well as Doug Shannon from EVENTtoons with guest artists Zach Trenholm and Rhoda Draws. The evening showcased the latest trends in fashion and the guests enjoyed the sketches. This was the second event that I've done for Neiman Marcus, in November I drew at their Red Tie Gala 2010, which raised money the poor.

11-28-09 Bat Mitzvah

A Bat Mitzvah with my caricatures as the entertainment. This family drew up a dry erase board of all the kids attending, so that no one was left out and no one had to wait in line. They also set up a clothesline system to hang the drawings as I finished them. The little girl in the purple dress (bottom right) had so much fun watching me that she took over seeing who would be next and wiping away the name once they had gone. Even with my more detailed "shaded" sketches, we managed to get in over 40 drawings (all the kids and some adults too!) in about 2 hours.

9-27-09 Family and Friends Party in Los Gatos

A Bay Area Couple threw a Summer Party for their friends, and had me come and draw. I was originally asked to come for an hour and a half, but ended up staying more than three hours drawing to fit in each person.

A gift

When a local family hired me for a birthday party, I drew everyone there with about half an hour to spare. Since they had already paid, I made this drawing of the birthday girl for them to make up for the extra minutes.
There are a lot more samples of this kind of work on the illustration blog link.

Red Truck Wine at Servinos! 7-29-09

This was a really special event for me. Red Truck wines flew in their team from all across the country. They spent a day playing in the city, ending at Servino's Restaurant in Tiburon.
I was contacted a few weeks beforehand, and digitally painted a background for each of the drawings...

For fun, I digitally painted in one of them as an example:

Then each of them had their own turn getting one:

This job gave me the opportunity to step beyond simple, quick caricatures. There is no end to the amount of creativity that can be employed to make an event more special and unique.

As I was leaving, the owner's of the Restaurant Servino's in Tiburon had me draw them as well :

I got this e-mail the next day:

Hi Jon,
Thank you so much.  The caricatures were one of the highlights of the week...everyone was talking about them today!
I know you didn't quite make it through the group but we were all impressed that you did so many and of such great quality in so little time. AND you managed to capture the personalities of the group on paper.  Amazing!
It was a real pleasure working with you,
  Becky

7-18-09 the Proposal

As a caricaturist, there are all kinds of jobs that you never expected to do. This job popped up on me, and left me with just a day to do the drawing. I walked up to the happy couple eating strawberries and drinking champagne, and asked if they would like a sketch. I think she was genuinely surprised...

7-19-09 Birthday Party in SF

Three hours of non stop drawing at the Canton Restaurant.

7-18-09 Part Two, KIDS PARTY!

This job was a model for putting together a great children's party!

I was asked ahead of time to provide a few drawings of the birthday girl, which were photocopied for the kids to color while waiting for their caricature. I was happy to provide this little extra for free when they asked me a couple weeks ahead of time.

They had the great idea to print up T-Shirts for the PAW-TY crew (the theme was Bolt)...

I drew tons of kids, but the adults had their fun too!

7-18-09 Part One, Menlo Park outdoor party!

The beginning of a BUSY Saturday! This job had perks, there was a crepes by Antoine Kaufman, an espresso bar, and the very talented Jodi Carr was there doing face painting. I heard over and over from people waiting for a drawing that they had never seen Face Painting done that well before.  The caricatures were a hit as well, I was asked to stay an extra hour to get in the line of kids.
